Respect Victoria is an independent Statutory Authority focused on the primary prevention of family violence for all Victorians. That means stopping violence before it starts, by changing the culture that allows it to happen.
We have been established under the Prevention of Family Violence Act 2018 to:
- Fulfill Recommendation 188 of the Royal Commission into Family Violence
- Deliver on commitments in Free from violence (Victoria’s strategy to prevent family violence and all forms of violence against women). We lead on two key areas of this strategy: Research and evaluation, and community engagement.
Where we fit in
We are the only Victorian organisation dedicated to the primary prevention of all forms of family violence and we are unique in that we are an independent voice.
By establishing an organisation solely focused on this, Victoria is recognising that prevention work – which will ultimately reduce the need for response services – requires a dedicated focus to be effective.
It is vital that we work in partnership and share information with the family violence sector. We will work with Our Watch and ANROWS (Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety), whose focus is on men’s violence against women and their children. We will work with VicHealth to learn from its approach to general health promotion and chronic disease prevention. And we will work with Family Safety Victoria, which is dedicated to reforming family violence response.
