Community governance opportunities: Lived experience advocates

Who should apply

Expressions of interest are now open for two community roles on the Respect Ballarat Local Advisory Group. Applications close Monday 24 November

We are looking for Expressions of Interest from people who:

  • live and/or work in the Ballarat region, who have strong ties to local communities
  • are passionate about and committed to preventing gendered violence in Ballarat
  • have experience advocating or advising through the lens of lived experience of gendered or family violence
  • are committed to listening, learning and working alongside leaders and communities to support the implementation of Respect Ballarat
  • have experience or are interested in learning more about governance.

These roles will be held by individuals representing their own experience. Other members in the group will represent local prevention and response organisations, local government, and people working in priority settings. The group will be co-chaired by Respect Victoria and Women’s Health Grampians.

We actively encourage expressions of interest from people with lived experience of violence, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people of all genders, people with a disability, people from racially marginalised communities and LGBTIQ+ people.

The Local Advisory Group is responsible for:

  • representing and championing the work of Respect Ballarat locally and statewide
  • providing strategic oversight and expert advice to Respect Victoria, funded organisations, and other governance groups
  • supporting community mobilisation to strengthen support for and uptake of prevention efforts across Ballarat
  • contributing to and participating in a learning approach
  • supporting and contributing to sustainability approaches for Respect Ballarat.

Respect Victoria is committed to working alongside people with lived experience of violence to create change, and the Ballarat community has expressed a need to safely embed lived experience perspectives across all parts of the initiative. The Local Advisory Group will be led by Respect Ballarat’s guiding principles.

The Local Advisory Group will meet bi-monthly in the first half of 2026, starting in February, and then transition to quarterly.

Sitting fees will be paid in accordance with the Appointment and Remuneration Guidelines for Victorian public entities. As of October 2025, current daily fees for members are up to $259. To participate in the group, all incoming members will be required to provide a police check.

Your application will be reviewed by the team at Respect Victoria. We’ll be in touch to confirm the outcome of your application in December. If you have any questions, please reach out to our team at practice@respectvictoria.vic.gov.au
